Author and Presenter: Athanasios TerzisLanguage: EnglishLength: 68 min. Successful wing play with the 1-4-3-3 formation – Positioning, movements and combination play on the wings based on the tactics of Pep Guardiola with Manchester City When a team dictates possession, the opponents are usually forced in a passive role within their own half of the field. In order to be effective during defending they get well organized and compact especially in the central area which is the crucial part of the field. This reaction makes it difficult for the attacking team to break through them from the centre, so they should search for solutions in wide areas were more space can be found. In this presentation, which includes detailed diagrams and videos, we will analyse the attacking tactics of Pep Guardiola with Manchester City. The focus will be on how, through appropriate positioning, well timed movements and effective combination play on the wings, the Citizens manage to break through the opposition. Great attention is paid to the positioning and the reactions of the opposition, as the opponents play significant role in every tactical situation and we have to take them into account for appropriate decision making. Additionally, several animated drills are presented to help coaches apply the tactics used by Pep Guardiola to their teams, by simply adding or adjusting them to their own training sessions. The analysed tactics for successful wing play can also be used with every possible formation by making the appropriate adjustments.

Playing without the ball - Prefect ball possession - Superb positioning Presentation Group: U19 Schalke 04 Duration: 89 min. Presenter: Norbert Elgert (FC Schalke 04) Director: Peter Schreiner (Institute for Youth Soccer) Positional Play In this 3rd part of The Art of Playing Attacking Soccer, it is all about the importance of good positional play as the basis for a successful build-up attack that always is indicated when a quick counter-attack is not possible. It is characterized by a safe build-up, either over the wings or through the middle. Ball possession even under pressure The attacking team plays the ball into the attacking zone from its defensive zone through midfield and does so with well-executed pass sequences. The most important quality for this to be successful is the ability of the whole team to keep ball possession even under intensive pressure by the opponent. Ball possession is no guarantee for a win, but it allows to dictate tempo and rhythm and above all, to force the opponent to do a lot of running. Positional Games Top teams have an almost prefect ability to retain the ball no matter what the circumstances. To acquire this ability, small and large positional games should be included in practices. In this eVideo you can see how Norbert Elgert has his team go through preliminary passing exercises and positional games in order to put pressure on a well-organized defense. It is very important to apply exercises and game variation properly and to communicate clearly what is to be learned. That is why there is a crucial emphasis in this eVideo as to how the coach interacts with his players: How do you correct your players? What do you emphasize? How do you motivate your players? What is your body language?

More Information: The running performance demanded of a soccer player differs considerably from that of an athlete. Sprints, turns, changes of direction, runs with the ball and challenges for the ball both before and after a sprint require the player to adjust his stride length and frequency to widely varied game situations. This makes a variable, flexible and selective application of running techniques during the game necessary. For selective conditioning of running coordination, it is necessary to set priorities within training sessions. Fast footwork, involving lightning fast coordination of nerves and foot muscles, is at the heart of many drills.

Author and Presenter: Athanasios TerzisLanguage: EnglishLength: 51 min. The role of attacking midfielders in overload creation and exploitation with the 1-4-3-3 – An analysis of Pep Guardiola tactics with Manchester City The role of the attacking midfielders in the 1-4-3-3 formation is very important. These two are usually key players in the 1-4-3-3 so they have to be top quality. Apart from their technical excellence, the attacking midfielders have to have high tactical awareness, as this will enable them to create situations in order to break through the opposition’s defensive organization. One of the situations which helps an attacking team to break through the opposition’s defence is the creation of overloads (numerical superiority). Creating overloads is of high priority for teams that aim to apply the principles of positional play. In this presentation, which includes detailed diagrams and videos, we will analyse the attacking tactics of Pep Guardiola with Manchester City and we will focus on how, through intelligent positioning, the attacking midfielders create overloads in specific areas of the field. Additionally, we will present how these overloads can be exploited by good decision making and appropriate combination play. In every tactical situation analysed, the opponents play a significant role, so they can’t be left outside of the context. That’s why in this project the reaction of the opposition is always taken into account so that players end up with the appropriate decision making. Finally, the animated drills are designed to train players in taking the right decisions by reading the reaction of the opponent as well as to help coaches apply these tactics to their teams, by simply adding or adjusting them to their own training sessions. The overload creation and exploitation analysed can also be used in every possible formation by making the appropriate adjustments.

Author: Peter Schreiner Presenter: Dirk Rauin Duration: 60 min. Contents: coordination for advanced reaction and speed of action complex coordination training. Modern soccer is characterized by its high tempo. To play soccer successfully, players must react faster than ever when they receive the ball, as well as making frequent sudden changes of direction, sprints into free space and instant switches from defense to attack. The demands on soccer players are so great that special and systematic training of their running coordination, especially their running technique and rhythm, appears essential. What are the special aspects of the conditioning of running coordination for soccer players? The running performance demanded of a soccer player differs considerably from that of an athlete. Small, rapid steps ensure that the player can control the ball securely and move in any direction he chooses. The object is to remain in contact with the ground. He can then retain control of his body and accelerate quickly in any given direction. In addition, good footwork is essential to a good shooting technique.

Thematic focuses: Warm-Up of the brain Movement-Tasks in 3 steps In Module 1 Matthias Nowak presents important movements while standing and without touching the ball, that later in the second and third module will be broadened and modified In Module 2 the focus will lay on movement-tasks while standing with tip- and ball-touches In Module 3, Matthias Nowak shows movement tasks and combinations with ball in forward motion. Innovative technical training: New learning and changing routines Hinder routines Break through automatisms Fluent and economic movements Competence of motion – intelligence of motion Variability and creativity instead of automatic acting Technical- and creative training: It will be about connecting eye, brain and body. Those (inter-)connections will create a considerable advantage in game. Quick and better perception and with that better decisions that have to be made quickly and rightfully. The innovative technical training will initiate a self-organized process within the players, helping them to create ideal “plans of motion” that will care for the ideal execution of action plans The innovative technical training also creates fluent and economic motions beyond the ideal of the execution of a motion or technique The innovative technical training quickly, efficiently and sustainably solves movement-problems through recoding the memory of motions The players will realize their own body actively. Limiting patterns will be dissolved and new intelligent patterns for more and better plans of motion will be established. You learn through different variations instead of automatization. Through the highest variable access of multiple movement-patterns the attention to tactical guidelines can be increased. The innovative technical training has to be a challenge for the players. It will be about finding a solution for a movement-exercise. Technical training: Movement coordination with the ball (Knowing about the individuality and variability of motion and technique) Teaching of intelligent motion patterns for a better variety of movements and a better conception of the own body A feel for the ball beyond the ideal (rhythmic connections of movements under the aspect of space, time and dynamics) Creative training: Teaching of the executive functions (definition) in football Correlation/ cognition and executive functions Football is “hard brainwork” – a comparison! Different profiles for different positions in the game The best playmaker of the world Game-intelligence tests – do they work? Single-exercises, team-exercises, game types Matthias Nowak cooperates with the Swedish scientist Torbjörn Vestberg: “Matthias Nowak developed training types that produce perfect results.
